It

It usually gets me one way or another but the lack of sleep and the craziness we put our bodies through when we travel does have consequences. Mine caught me sleeping over 10 hours and waking up well past noon today. So much for my early start in Cape Town seeing the sites, which there are far to many to see in a day. I'm also going to blame my catatonic sleep on the amount of wine we consumed on our trip to Stellenbosch and Franscchoeck, two great wine towns in the heart of the vineyards. The wine country here is every bit as beautiful as Napa or Sonoma if not more so.

We started the morning at the Root 44 Market which is a lively market of vendors with everything from clothes to plants to art and lots of food. Live music too. Cousin Alyssa and I wandered and shopped until hunger took over and she headed out for food while I was in charge of wine (natch). Bought a yummy rose brut sparkling wine while Alyssa found wood fired pizza and quesadillas. Of course the quesadilla was filled with bacon and blue cheese but it was in a tortilla so I think it counts.

We had dinner reservations in another town(Oh yeah, we Ubered out to the market but then of course really didn't have a way to get around) and were asking the couple who joined our table if they knew the best way to get to Franscchoek and they offered us a ride as that is where they lived. Fabulous Brit couple who lives here half the year, they took us the 45 minutes to this wonderful little town and filled our heads with local knowledge along the drive.

This is the restaurant where we had dinner. It was an 8 course tasting menu with wine and was impeccable. I think total price for both of us was about $120. And we had a lot of wine.

Tomorrow the real adventure begins as I hit the bus route and the wild coast. Stay tuned . . .
